mermaid

The all-rounder

The Mermaid is Maurice’s mainstay performance design for small waves. A board designed to replace anything fishy. In tandem with an ATM a surfer can ride tiny waves on the Mermaid and jump back onto the ATM when the waves get bigger. As with the transition between Metro and Protow, between Mermaid and ATM there are significant design differences but enough similarities to make the switch non traumatic and the transition last a couple of waves not days.

This design has won surfers many world tour events in places like Hossegor, Brazil, and Aussie beach break locations.

The Mermaid is approximately 1 to 2 inches shorter than and 1/4 to 1/2 an inch wider than your standard short board. The wider tail helps carry you over the flatter sections of the wave and the extra curve in the Mermaid tail keeps it loose and snappy.

The Modern Retro

The Metro combines width and thickness from the old retro fish, but introduces a tow inspired bottom rocker and a very deep concave. More width in the tail creates a larger sweet spot and an accentuated change in curve at the 1 mark loosens the board up. This board replaces all Fish type boards.

This design has a foot in both camps. Stability and float while still maintaining the edgy characteristics of speed and rippability. Evidence that you can occasionally teach an old dog new tricks.

The Metro is easy to turn and will suit surfers that like a retro feel, but want performance from a board. Unlike an old school fish the Metro 3 will sit high on steep fast sections and won’t morph into a shopping trolley style slide when you want to lay a full tilt cutback or carve deep lines into the wave face. Ask and you shall receive. This is no bog monster.

The Magic Board

Over the last 20 years of working and testing with the world’s elite surfers, I have continued to design and shape the magic surfboard for surfers from Curren, Occy, Margo and Slater to Taj, Trent and Ross Clarke-Jones. All these curves and rockers are all Original Designs and have been tested extensively for 12 months before releasing into the market.

The ATM is used in kid grommet boards, short boards, semi-guns or the next board up from a short board and in the bigger Indo/Hawaii guns, that are up to 10 foot long. This design has an elite pedigree and can be relied upon to ride in all conditions.

Pro surfers or advanced riders require a design to work in a variety of waves. The ATM can be relied upon for travel, as it will handle anything that Mother Nature throws at it! Custom is King!

ez performance hybrid

Because surfing should be fun!

The plan shape and rocker lines of the performance hybrid are similar to that of the ATM.

This model starts at 6’6″ and goes to 7′. 20-21 inches wide, this is a short board for big blokes that may have been out of the water for a while, but still want to surf contemporary lines – and it’s also perfect for teaching your kids to surf.

protow

The most advanced surfboard on the market

Based on the tow series evolution. The design has a deep concave that is punctuated by a sharp rail which in historical terms would have created a board that would go really fast in a straight line. The Protow ushers in a new era of speed and carve surfing with a rail that won’t let go even in the most critical bottom turn scenario.

The Protow pairs perfectly with the metro  as the MC 2 board quiver. Width and volume in the right places create a board that quite often floats better than a conventional board 3 or 4 inches longer and facilitates tighter stronger turns with considerably less effort. This board will have you paddling over the grommets but will impress with its performance steep and deep.

The Strongest Tail Ever!

About three years ago, while towing in extreme 20 foot plus surf with Ross Clarke-Jones, we destroyed the tails of several boards and were unable to continue the session. When fixing one of these damaged tails, I sanded the tips back to square, with the vision to insert wooden tips to make the tail more resiliant. Suddenly, I realised if i reinforced the tail with rovings this should fix the problem! Hence the birth of the Swat Tail, which is a hybrid Swallow/ Bat tail.

CONSTRUCTION & MATERIALS

PU (Poly Urethane)
This is the traditional foam that has been around since the sixties and is the easiest to shape and repair, and is also inert when being crafted.

EPS (Expanded Polystyrene)
Open cell, light, buoyant. Takes water if damaged and can only be repaired with epoxy. I only recommend EPS for bigger surfers that require more float from the board.

Styrofoam (Extruded Polystyrene)
Closed cell, slightly heavier, must only be used with epoxy resin. The jury is still out on the gases that these blanks keep oozing.

Stringers
I only use the strongest stringers commercially available - 4 ply hardwood - lessens breakages.

Resins

Epoxy
I have used epoxy resins for over 20 years because of their lower toxicity and superior flex and strength.
- solvent is organic
- no acetones
- no styrones
- no toxic catalysts
